A Clinton Township grandmother has found herself on the wrong side of the law after her grandson brought her handgun into Center Line High School, prompting a lockdown and a full-scale police investigation.
52-year-old Lisa Renee Christy is facing a charge of firearms safe storage violation, this after authorities discovered that her grandson had taken her gun and ammunition from an unlocked room in her home and brought them to school, as reported by The Detroit News; the incident, which took place last Tuesday, involved three students, two of whom are accused of handling the firearm and taking selfies with it.
Prosecutor Peter Lucido of the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office articulated the gravity of the situation in a statement to FOX 2 Detroit, saying, "Safe storage of firearms is required by the laws of Michigan, and all responsible gun owners must know they will be held accountable for violations." Lamenting the potential for tragedy, Lucido emphasized that such mishandling endangers individuals and disrupts the educational environment.
Christy, who has no prior criminal record, pleaded not guilty at her arraignment. She was released on her recognizance with explicit conditions barring her from possessing any firearms or other weapons. Her next hearing is scheduled for June 3.
