Governor Jared Polis has signed into law a bipartisan bill targeting senior care in Colorado, a significant step aimed at easing the transition into elder care facilities. The legislation, known as HB25-1184, received support from both sides of the aisle and allows senior living institutions to extend community-based services to individuals on their waiting lists, services that are deemed essential for the health and social needs of elderly residents.
The newly signed bill was brought forward by Representative Amy Paschal, D-Colorado Springs, and Senator Dylan Roberts, D-Frisco, among others. On hand for the signing, Rep. Paschal spoke to the importance of the legislation saying, "From accessible transportation and nutrition support to socialization opportunities, community-based services are incredibly beneficial to older Coloradans." With this move, as facilities wait for older Coloradans, they are empowered to engage them in these supportive programs earlier than before, as accounted by Colorado Senate Democrats.
In a statement that speaks to the challenges faced by Colorado seniors, Sen. Roberts highlighted the benefits of this legislative action. "The in-between time from knowing senior care is necessary and actually being admitted to care programs can be long and very difficult," he said, as per Colorado Senate Democrats. The bill, by offering access to crucial services like transportation, social programs, and nutrition counseling, aims to address this gap, providing vital interim support.
Also backing the bill were Representative Anthony Hartsook, R-Parker, and Senator John Carson, R-Douglas County, acknowledging the barrier of long waitlists for life care institutions, especially in rural or underserved areas. By enabling access to care services earlier on, they are intended to enhance the well-being of those awaiting admission. It's a response to the handful of life care institutions that Colorado has, which are sometimes in smaller communities, to offer services to seniors who can pay one-time admission fees.
