Countdown to Kindergarten is the latest buzz at Fort Hayes Metropolitan Education Center. Columbus City Schools recently played host to a flock of eager young minds, all set to take their first official step into the world of education. It's a community affair, marking a rite of passage for kids on the brink of their academic journeys. The event is designed to fully, and to festively, prepare kids and their families for the school year that lies ahead.
According to an article published by Columbus City Schools, Terra Baker, CCS Director of Early Childhood Education, said, “This is where the students come and get all of the information and different materials and resources that they can utilize over the summer to prepare for kindergarten.” The day was punctuated with lively activities, key resources, and hands-on games designed to jump-start these young learners' education.
Families visiting various stations were greeted with educational goodies to take home. Preschool intervention teacher at Salem Elementary School, Alli Tambini, told Columbus City Schools, “Here at our table, we have a math station where the kids are practicing counting to 10 with a pop-it we gave them. They’re going from station to station and getting goodies to take home to practice skills and get ready for kindergarten.” The event wasn't just about distributing materials—it was an immersive experience where learning and fun were interwoven.
A free kindergarten readiness kit was another highlight, offering tools to keep the educational momentum going at home. Mike Friede, who brought his family to the event, said in an excitement-laced statement obtained by Columbus City Schools, "Today is great. [My kids] are having a great time.” His son Merek, showing budding enthusiasm for education, couldn't wait “to learn big numbers” in kindergarten. It's evident the event served to do more than ready children, it sparked an eagerness to learn and grow.
