While students around the nation ponder their next steps post-graduation, Jayden Ashford, a senior at Northland High School and attendee of Fort Hayes Career Center, is all set with a career pathway that seems to be anything but a question mark. He's taken full advantage of the opportunities presented by the Career-Technical Education Programs within Columbus City Schools (CCS), as Ashford's immersion into the carpentry program has led him directly into the workforce. Columbus City Schools reported how his avid interest in construction from an early age played a significant role.
After attending "Shadow Day," an initiative for juniors to gain insights into the daily grind of the City of Columbus Department of Building & Zoning Services (BZS), Ashford became one of the few selected for an internship out of nearly seventies, giving him on-the-ground experience in structural safety. During the internship, with a drive to absorb as much knowledge as possible, Ashford made a significant impression. BZS officials couldn’t help but notice his wide-eyed enthusiasm, as "Jayden just had 'it,'" explained Cynthia Rickman, assistant director at BZS, Columbus City Schools showcased.
Rotating through field visits and participating in CPR and safety training, alongside workshops, he wasn't simply shadowing; he was shown the ropes while getting financial compensation for his time. But the story doesn’t culminate with the internship’s conclusion. Ashford continued to liaise with his mentors, studied building codes independently, and aimed to convey his dedication for this career path.
Ultimately, when the BZS staff revisited Fort Hayes in the spring to dialogue with former interns on their post-graduation visions, they were met with Ashford's declaration of intent to join their ranks. "And they said, 'Well, we're glad to hear that, because we're here to tell you that we have selected you as the trainee.' He said, 'You have made my life,'" Ashford’s enthusiasm is evident as reported by Columbus City Schools. While others are grappling with the uncertainty that comes after high school, Ashford's proactive approach throughout his education has furnished him with not just employment at BZS but also a direction that is grounded in his passion and hard work.
