In a decisive move to secure the future of air travel within the city, the Dallas City Council has given the green light to Southwest Airlines, extending its lease at Dallas Love Field for another 12 years. The updated lease now secures the airline's presence at the airport until September 2040, extending well beyond the original expiration date of September 2028. The announcement comes after the Department of Aviation proposed the early culmination of the Use and Lease Agreement, a strategic play to keep flights running smoothly as passenger numbers soar, having already seen over 16 million people come through in the calendar year of 2024.
Mayor of Dallas Eric L. Johnson is all in on the deal, "I am proud to see Dallas extend its longstanding partnership with Southwest Airlines,” he said, behind the decision to ensure Love Field can tackle congestion head-on, maintain top-tier operations, and continue to ferry Dallas residents and businesses efficiently. Bob Jordan, the big boss at Southwest Airlines, echoed Johnson's sentiments, tipping his hat to the leadership of Johnson and City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert for their hand in securing the airline's future. “Our first flight took off from Love Field in 1971, and our purpose today is just as fulfilling as it was then—to connect People to what matters most in their lives with friendly, reliable, and low-cost air travel,” Jordan remarked, per the City of Dallas.
This proactive stance isn't just about keeping the status quo, but it's a building block for long-haul planning and investment. Such early agreement finalization is critical with passenger numbers set to hit the 10 million mark by the end of 2026. Love Field isn't taking this forecast lying down, ready to roll out the infrastructure and operational support to keep pace with the growth.
