Charges have been brought against a man following an alarming encounter reported in the Northwest. The Metropolitan Police Department reports that on May 24, approximately 5:20 p.m., police officers were called to the 500 block of New Jersey Avenue, Northwest. Initial reports of indecent exposure quickly escalated into a more volatile scenario. A suspect, later identified as 31-year-old Husani Chacho of Northwest, DC, allegedly reacted with aggression when confronted by victims over his inappropriate conduct.
According to a statement obtained by the Metropolitan Police Department, the disturbance saw the accused fleeing into a local hotel after victims asked him to leave. Inside, he apparently started throwing bottles at them and hurled hateful slurs. The chaotic scene was followed by Chacho's attempt to escape, but not before the officers responded to the situation, arresting him in connection with the incident.
Chacho faces multiple charges, including Simple Assault (Hate/Bias), Destruction of Property (hate/bias), Lewd, Indecent, or Obscene Acts, Unlawful Entry, and Disorderly Conduct. The nature of the incident led authorities to view the assault as possibly being motivated by hate or bias. As the police department notes, the hate crime classification remains provisional and could evolve depending on what the ongoing investigation reveals.
With the investigation continuing, the Special Liaison Branch has taken up the task to assist in the matter, as the consequences may become more severe if indeed confirmed as hate-motivated. The distinction of a hate crime by the Metropolitan Police Department, it's important to understand, does not guarantee the prosecution will follow suit. Despite Chacho being charged under hate crime statutes, prosecution requires an independent assessment and decision by legal authorities.
