The City of Denver and Volunteers of America (VOA) Colorado marked a significant milestone with the opening of Theodora Family Hotel, a new shelter aimed at helping families and veterans facing homelessness. Occupying the site of the former VOA Family Motel at 4855 W. Colfax Ave., the facility dramatically upgrades its predecessor's capacity and services, now offering 60 individual family suites that can accommodate up to 240 people each night.
Denver's Mayor Mike Johnston celebrated the opening, stressing the importance of family unity, especially during hard times. "In good times and in bad, there is nothing more important than family," said Mayor Johnston, as per the City and County of Denver. Theodora Family Hotel is designed to maintain that familial bond while helping residents regain their footing.
The construction of the $28 million state-of-the-art project, which includes features like trauma-informed design and amenities for education and crisis intervention, was partially funded by a $17.7 million contribution from the City of Denver. This funding, pooled from RISE Denver General Obligation Bonds and Community Development Block Grant, demonstrates a shared commitment from various stakeholders.
Each suite in the shelter has been thoughtfully designed with a separate living area, kitchenette, and bedding solutions to accommodate families of different sizes. The ground level of the hotel serves as a community space where a range of services will be offered. "The Theodora Family Hotel is more than a place to stay—it’s a place where hope begins, it’s a second chance," VOA Colorado's President and CEO, Dave Schunk, explained, as obtained by City and County of Denver, emphasizing the shelter's comprehensive approach.
