Firefighters battled a significant blaze early Wednesday morning at the Magnolia Terrace Apartments in West Houston, which resulted in dozens of residents being displaced. The Houston Fire Department responded to the call at around 5:30 a.m., which quickly escalated from a two-alarm to a three-alarm fire. Flames were reportedly contained to one building, but subsequent damage affected two neighboring structures within the complex, as reported by Click2Houston. The fire endangered approximately 24 units.

HFD Assistant Chief James Campbell told KHOU 11 that the department deployed roughly 100 firefighters to actively fight the blaze. Despite the intensity of the fire, no injuries have been reported so far. "We have no people unaccounted for, but we always go back and double-check twice," Campbell said. While firefighters did not face issues with fire hydrants or gaining access to the apartment complex, the speed at which the fire grew posed a significant challenge to the emergency response teams.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, and arson investigators are looking into it. Assistant Chief Campbell said the building’s structure is being checked after parts of the roof and floors collapsed. Smoke from the fire was visible on Houston TranStar traffic cameras. Crews will stay at the site all day to keep the area safe and finish any needed searches, as per KHOU 11.

A resident of the complex, reflecting on the distressing situation, shared with KHOU 11 his harrowing experience. "My girlfriend woke me up saying it smells like the apartment's on fire and then we ran out of the apartment and didn't even get to grab anything," he recounted. The resident further revealed that there were no alarms going off and only the desperate efforts of a woman going door-to-door managed to raise the alarm. In the midst of this chaos, there were moments of communal bravery, as described by the resident: "I did see someone throwing a baby out of the second floor, luckily able to escape." Two men reportedly caught the child, highlighting the life-threatening risks faced by those caught in the incident.
