Heads up, commuters. If you plan on driving along U.S. 41 next week, expect some delays. The left lanes going both northbound from the Peace River Bridge to Melbourne Street and southbound from Sunseeker Resort to the Peace River Bridge are going to be closed temporarily for vegetative work. According to the Charlotte County website, these closures are scheduled to happen from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., starting Monday, May 19, and continuing through Wednesday, May 21.

The need to occasionally trim back the green can't be overlooked, but it sure does seem to throw a wrench in our day-to-day. If you usually use this stretch of the road during these hours, it'd behoove you to proactively plan an alternate route. The Public Works Department has set up a detour, clearly marked with signage, to help guide travelers around the construction zone. And you know the drill—when in and around work zones, remain sharp and cautious. The department has reminded drivers to "remain alert at all times" and to "exercise caution when traveling in the vicinity of construction zones," according to the Charlotte County. No one wants their day—or anyone else’s—to take an unexpected turn for the worse.

What's causing this need for lane closures, you ask? The Public Works folks are doing what they call vegetative work. For those of us that live here, the heavy foliage and rapid plant growth are just a part of our landscape. Yet, it's these very elements that necessitate such frequent upkeeps.

As always, we can expect to potentially sit through some additional traffic during these periods. So if you can to squeeze in some extra minutes—or better, hours—into your travel time, that'd probably help maintain your sanity. After all, patience can run especially thin in the face of unplanned stop-and-go. For more information on the upcoming traffic disruptions, visit the Charlotte County government website.
