Orlando's Catholic community reels from a recent lawsuit implicating the Diocese of Orlando in a deep-rooted scandal. Shawn Teuber, a man now stepping into the public light, is suing the Diocese for $25 million, citing years of sexual abuse by a pastor, the late Robert Hoeffner. The civil suit, filed on Friday, makes serious allegations that the church, including its school and parish, might have intentionally turned a blind eye to the abuse, or even deliberately concealed it, according to a report by FOX 35 Orlando.
Teuber's case is not only seeking monetary compensation, but also demands a jury trial. This move appears to be an attempt to hold the Diocese of Orlando accountable in a very public forum. It was this same Robert "Father Bob" Hoeffner who, police say, may be posthumously linked to a grisly triple shooting in Palm Bay last year. The shooter, identified as Brandon Kapas, killed Hoeffner and two others before being shot dead by police. Reports from the WFTV interview with Teuber suggest Kapas could have been another of Hoeffner's victims, a revelation that drove Teuber to disclose his own experiences.
In detailing the patterns of abuse, Teuber brings to the surface a horrid narrative where "Father Bob" began grooming him while he was a seventh-grader at St. Joseph Catholic School. According to the lawsuit, Hoeffner allegedly removed Teuber from class and other school activities to abuse him across various locations, including the school premises, his car, and Hoeffner’s home. A fellow student had raised concerns about Hoeffner's interactions with young male students back then, but those warnings were allegedly ignored. "I’ve carried this pain for years, and I couldn’t stay silent any longer," Teuber said at a press conference, as reported by FOX 35 Orlando.
Rebuttals are scant from the Diocese of Orlando, which maintains its stance of unawareness regarding Hoeffner's alleged activities during or after his pastoral tenure, which ended in 2016. "The Diocese of Orlando was not made aware of any allegations of abuse during Father Robert Hoeffner’s pastoral leadership, nor after he retired in 2016. We continue to pray for the Palm Bay and St. Joseph community and all involved," the Diocese said in a prepared statement cited by FOX 35 Orlando. In the shadow of these somber events, Teuber stands resolute, aspiring not only to heal from his past but to ensure others find the courage to come forward and demand the justice they too deserve.
