Former Irvine City Councilmember Tammy Kim is facing multiple felony charges following accusations that she lied about her residency while serving in public office and during her run for mayor. According to a press release from the Orange County District Attorney's Office, she has been charged with perjury, among other serious offenses. Kim's future in politics now hangs in the balance as a conviction could preclude her from ever holding public office again.
Among the charges, Kim is accused of three counts each of perjury by declaration and filing false documents, and one count each of public official aiding the illegal casting of votes, filing false nomination papers, knowing registration of someone not entitled to vote, voter registration fraud, and a misdemeanor count of making a false statement. This daunting list of charges has the potential to result in a maximum sentence of over 10 years in state prison, directly challenging her integrity and the public trust she was elected to uphold.
The investigation into Kim's residency began after a resident tipped off the Orange County District Attorney's Office. Allegedly, Kim falsely changed her voter registration and driver's license to an address on Alaris Aisle, an address she purportedly never lived at. These actions not only call into question Kim's judgment but also cast a shadow on the electoral process itself, an institution that relies heavily on the principle of fair representation and the veracity of its participants.
According to the same press release, Kim suffered a further setback when a Superior Court judge ordered her name be removed from the ballot for the April 15, 2025, special election following the granting of a petition filed by an Irvine resident. This legal intervention not only derailed her campaign efforts but also visibly removed her from the race, leading to Betty Martinez Franco's victory in the District 5 special election for city council.
