At a recent speaking engagement in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, former President Donald J. Trump delivered a major address that underscored his vision for the Middle East, touching upon themes of prosperity, stability, and self-determination for the region. The remarks by Trump come eight years after his initial visit as president, with echoes of the past and aspirations for the future. In his speech, Trump emphasized the potential for Middle Eastern nations to become global leaders in prosperity and innovation on their own terms, without Western intervention.
"Exactly eight years ago this month, I stood in this very room and looked forward to a future in which the nations of this region would drive out the forces of terrorism and extremism ... and take your place among the proudest, most prosperous, most successful nations anywhere in the world as leaders of a modern and rising Middle East," Trump stated as he reflected on his administration's contributions to the area's trajectory, according to a White House statement.
Trump's address highlighted a shift from conflict to commerce, suggesting that the Middle East's future should focus on technological innovation, economic growth, and cooperative urban development. He criticized past policies that, he argued, entangled the West in costly endeavors with limited success and noted that interventions often failed to understand the complexities of the societies they aimed to reconstruct, citing how so-called "nation-builders" wrecked more nations than they built and how interventionists were interfering in complex societies they did not fully understand.
Extending a gesture of diplomacy toward Iran, former President Trump advocated for a renewed path forward, emphasizing the potential for a peaceful and prosperous Middle East — a vision he asserted is now within reach. “After so many decades of conflict, finally it is within our grasp to reach the future that generations before us could only dream about — a land of peace, safety, harmony, opportunity, innovation, and achievement right here in the Middle East,” he stated resolutely, as per a report by the White House.
