The Texas Governor has officially designated May 19-23 as Texas Flood Awareness Week 2025, fitting into Fort Worth's ongoing stormwater control efforts. As reported by the City of Fort Worth's news release, the city's Stormwater Management Program concentrates on protecting residents and properties from stormwater damage year-round.
Understanding one's flood risk is crucial, and the City's Flood Risk Viewer can help homeowners and businesses discern their exposure to flood damage. "Flooding can happen anywhere, not just within mapped Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) floodplains and along creeks and rivers," says the Fort Worth news release. To mitigate losses, the city reminds residents that standard insurance policies often do not cover flood damage, encouraging them to consider obtaining flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
Fort Worth participates in FEMA's NFIP, enabling the city to offer a 15% discount on flood insurance, thanks to a rating system based on its floodplain management activities. Emphasizing the importance of preparedness, the "Turn Around, Don't Drown" campaign remains a key message to ward off the dangers of stormwater for motorists during floods. The city stresses not to underestimate the power of floodwaters, which can lead to risking lives and damaging vehicles, as per the same Fort Worth news release.
