For those in Raleigh with a yearning to combine fun and fitness, a new class offered by Sanderford Road Park may just be the rhythm to match your beat. Beginning June 3, adults 18 and older can participate in the Cardio Soul Line Dance, a series intended not just for dance enthusiasts but for anyone looking to inject a little cardiovascular zest into their routine.
The classes, which run every Tuesday from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., are an invitation to groove to soul line dances while burning calories – participants are advised to leave their sandals and flip-flops at home and instead, come prepared with water, a towel and an eager spirit ready to embrace even the missteps. The sessions will cover a spectrum of line dance moves, catering both to beginners and those with more familiar feet, teaching terminology and steps to a mix of new and old dances that are all about moving and sweating. The promise is to work out as much as you work it, as per the City of Raleigh.
While the focus is clearly on staying active, the underlying rhythm of these classes is community and connection, where dancers can not only learn from their instructors but from each other, creating a space of collective support and shared endeavor. The cost is fairly minimal — $12 for a four-week class — making it accessible for most.
A positive attitude is recommended because any missteps are just a part of the journey, every Tuesday, community members can join together, to smile, to sweat, and to step into better health, but in doing so they are also stepping into a collective experience, one that celebrates the joy of movement and the simple, profound connection of dancing in unison. For more details on how to join, potential participants can check out the City of Raleigh's announcement.
