Today, Governor Ron DeSantis spoke at the Florida Parent Educators Association's Annual Homeschool Convention in Kissimmee, an event geared towards families who take education into their own hands. According to FOX 35 Orlando, DeSantis discussed Florida's position as an education leader, particularly lauding the state's support for homeschooling and advocating for parental choice.
The convention, a significant gathering for homeschoolers throughout Florida, provides a venue for workshops and a marketplace of ideas and methodologies. Still, DeSantis used this platform to also voice his opinion on the state of higher education and external influences on curricula, emphasizing core academic subjects over political or social agendas. He says their focus should be on subjects like reading and math instead of political or social agendas, which schools nowadays are increasingly aligning with.
Additional comments made by DeSantis at the convention were critical of higher education institutions and some philosophical directions within academic circles. In a statement obtained by ClickOrlando, Governor DeSantis criticized what he views as a flawed focus in academia, stating, "A lot of these universities are more interested in intellectual fads. They’re interested in things like race and gender and ethnicity and focusing history through those lenses rather than giving an accurate assessment of what’s going on."
DeSantis also reportedly took aim at the portrayal of the Founding Fathers within university syllabuses, lamenting what he perceives to be a disregard for traditional historical narratives and favoring instead a perspective.
