Grand Prairie is officially sprouting greener after receiving a $2,345 grant from Keep Texas Beautiful (KTB). The funding, part of the 2024 Our Texas, Our Future Grant program, is set to nurture the Haven Community Garden with an automated drip irrigation system, perking up both water conservation and food production. Keep Grand Prairie Beautiful (KGPB) will oversee the project, aligning with KTB's and Keep America Beautiful's shared goals—litter prevention, recycling, and beautification.
Appreciative of the support they received, Dr. Patricia Redfearn, Solid Waste and Recycling Director for the City of Grand Prairie, praised the efforts and contribution from KTB and regional grocery titan H-E-B saying, "We’re incredibly thankful to H-E-B and Keep Texas Beautiful for supporting the Haven Community Garden with this grant," according to an announcement by the City of Grand Prairie. "Thanks to your generosity, we’ll be able to grow more fresh fruit for the community," added Redfearn, underlining the grant's impact on local sustainability and food accessibility.
The completion of the project is expected to be celebrated at a ribbon-cutting event, set for May 22 at the Haven Community Garden located at 1513 S Belt Line Rd. This is one of six community gardens in Grand Prairie managed by KGPB, which has seen over 9,350 pounds of produce donated in the past year. In tandem, the grant-funded infusion aims to water not just plants but also community engagement and opportunity in green space stewardship.
