Authorities responded to a shots-fired call on Wednesday evening that led to the arrest of a Riverside County man after a two-hour standoff in Grand Terrace. According to a release from the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department, dated Thursday, deputies were dispatched to the 22000 block of Newport Avenue at about 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, where 36-year-old Hector Leyva had barricaded himself inside a residence. Despite the tension, the standoff concluded without injury.
The situation escalated when deputies, while attempting to make contact, heard several shots fired from within the house. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Specialized Enforcement Division (SED) was quickly called to assist. After negotiations, Leyva eventually chose to peacefully surrender and was taken into custody by the authorities.
A search of Leyva's home yielded an assortment of weapons and materials, including a handgun, a rifle, roughly 10 pounds of explosive material, fireworks, and several hundred rounds of ammunition. The San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department's statement highlighted that the recovered items, particularly the firearms, violated Leyva’s status under Post-Release Community Supervision (PRCS). Apprehended without further incident, he was jailed on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm and discharging a gun at an inhabited dwelling.
The Sheriff's Department confirmed Leyva's bail was set at $50,000. All further inquiries should be directed to Deputy Carlson or Detective Magdaleno at Central Station, reachable at 909-387-3545. The case number is 122500387. Community members and witnesses are encouraged to come forward as the investigation continues.
