An incident unfolded on the streets of Staten Island last night as a 31-year-old man opened fire on NYPD officers after fleeing a traffic stop. According to ABC7NY, the incident took place around 7:30 p.m. near 294 Richmond Avenue in Port Richmond, where the suspect, driving a Nissan SUV, was initially stopped by the police. After refusing to comply, the suspect clashed with a second marked police vehicle and discharged a firearm from within his vehicle.
The gunfire did not hit any of the officers, but the impact caused glass to shatter, resulting in minor injuries to three officers who were subsequently hospitalized. Shortly after the incident, the gunman collided with a parked car, leading to his arrest. Despite the violent encounter, "police say they did not fire their weapons at the suspect," as ABC7NY reports.
Further details were provided by The New York Post, adding that the suspect is currently on parole for an assault in Manhattan. Two firearms were recovered from inside the Nissan. The suspect's identity has been withheld pending charges, though he was described by the NYPD as "a crazed gunman" who acted with reckless abandon.
The cause of the initial traffic stop has not been confirmed. According to police, the situation escalated when the 31-year-old man struck a police vehicle and fired at officers. He was later transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities stated that the interaction with a second NYPD vehicle was not part of a pursuit, but an unplanned encounter. No shots were fired by the officers during the incident.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities review the events that led to the incident on Staten Island. The NYPD is examining the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s actions and the resulting confrontation. Further information will be released as it becomes available.
