In Saginaw, Michigan, a keen-nosed K-9 named Loki proved instrumental in detecting a grave threat, when live pipe bombs were uncovered inside an abandoned vehicle. CBS News Detroit reported that Officer Wortman, accompanied by his K-9 partner, responded to a call at Mike's Wrecker Service this past Monday to inspect a truck that had been left unattended and, upon inspection, unearthed suspicious pipes.
The expertise of Officer Wortman and Loki led to the discovery of several explosive devices; the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad soon arrived confirming that these objects were indeed "live pipe bombs" with fuses ready for ignition, as per CBS News Detroit. The bomb squad managed the situation by deactivating the explosive devices, though the Saginaw Police Department has not released any information on arrests linked to the finding as the investigation is ongoing.
Further details on the case came courtesy of a social media statement made by the Saginaw Police Department, revealing that preliminary investigations had traced the vehicle's abandonment to a residence on Saginaw's west side in March of this year. The case is currently being investigated by Saginaw Police Detective/ATF Task Force Detective Anthony Accardo in collaboration with ATF agents.
The utilization of canine units like Loki is critical in the detection of explosives, exemplifying the vital safeguard they provide to public safety; "This case exemplifies the critical role K9s like Loki play in detecting incendiary devices, ensuring public safety," the Saginaw Police Department praised in their statement. Loki, sponsored by Covenant Hospital, routinely accompanies Officer Wortman on patrols throughout the hospital grounds, contributing to the safety of the City of Saginaw and its neighboring communities.
