A high-speed chase threading through Camden County streets culminated in an arrest last night, as local law enforcement put a stop to what could have been a disastrous episode. The chase began when a deputy from the Camden County Sheriff's Office initiated a traffic stop, but the situation quickly escalated as the driver decided to flee, prompting a pursuit that reached dangerous speeds.
The driver, identified as 23-year-old Versaun D. Williams of Elizabeth City, pushed his vehicle past 130 mph on the Camden Causeway, a fact confirmed by the Camden County Sheriff's Office in a social media post. The pursuit continued until Williams lost control, slammed into a guardrail and crashed as he was nearing the bridge into Elizabeth City which he was incredibly fortunate to survive; the accident did not result in life-threatening injuries despite the harrowing conditions and speeds involved.
Post-crash, Williams now faces the consequences of his actions, detained at Albemarle District Jail with a bond set at $75,000. He's been charged with multiple offenses not merely by the county sheriff's office but also by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol who took charge of the crash investigation; according to the sheriff's office's statement, accountability is not open to negotiation when lives are at stake on the road.
Reckless behavior behind the wheel, the sheriff's office reminds us, isn't a personal gamble but a public menace, stating, "High-speed pursuits are incredibly dangerous, and we are grateful this incident didn’t end in greater tragedy." The sheriff’s office continued affirming their commitment to public safety, stressing that the tireless work of their deputies in bringing such risky pursuits to an end is critical in maintaining the well-being of the community and ensuring that those who endanger others will be held responsible for their actions as part of their #RUNandDONE campaign.
