Students in Hillsborough County are getting their hands dirty for a good reason – learning about the environment through the practical act of planting trees. The county's Classroom to Canopy program, now in its second year, has teamed up with local schools to show kids the importance of trees in their communities. Frost and Lamb Elementary schools, along with Giunta Middle school, are the latest to join the effort, according to a report from Hillsborough County's official website.
The initiative is part of a broader focus on sustainability and building climate resilience. By hands-on participating in planting Florida-friendly trees, the students are learning to directly contribute to their urban environment. It's a practical lesson in how trees can absorb stormwater, mitigate storm surge, and provide shade, which is critical for combating heat-related illnesses in urban areas.
These efforts are not only about beautifying the local campuses but are set to also help lower temperatures in these areas. "Trees are not just landscape features, they are nature's infrastructure," the county’s initiative page emphasizes.
