A blaze engulfed and destroyed an integral wooden trestle bridge on the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad, heavily affecting transport services in Washington state. The fire, which was first reported to authorities at approximately 6:40 p.m. on Wednesday, left the bridge between Mineral and Morton in ruins, KING 5 reported.
The historical railway, known for its nostalgic freight and passenger services, saw the collapse of an expansion dream that had lasted minutes. It took minutes before the remote location was reached by fire crews, taking over an hour. Railroad staff arrived later, at around 8:45 p.m., but they found the bridge beyond reparations. Eric Maher, a representative from the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad, expressed the shock to KING 5, "I don't think we've processed it yet," Maher said. "It's devastating."
With suspicions of foul play, Maher noted that the trestle's destruction was abnormal, claiming that "bridges don't spontaneously combust." This has led to the belief that the incident may have involved human actors, further complicating an already difficult situation. The railway was working to restore and expand this section, with aspirations of activating it by next year.
In a tragic twist, the incident came just hours after the railway had been sold entirely to WFIM. Struggling to address the sudden calamity, the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad appealed for community support, offering a link for donations to cover insurance deductibles, legal fees, and recovery planning, as indicated by a post on social media. "We’re down. But not out," the organization said in a statement, with a social media post that the community had obtained by KOMO News. They have also implored the public to avoid the tracks for safety reasons while promising to issue updates and photographs as they assess the situation further.
