Earlier today, Houston firefighters responded to a significant fire at a large commercial building in the East End, with flames visible in the sky. According to KPRC 2, the call came in around 5 a.m. before dawn, to a location on Esperson near Navigation Drive, close to Hwy 90. As of the latest updates, no injuries have been reported.
Meanwhile, the Houston Fire Department (HFD) had its hands full with a 1-alarm fire at a vacant building in the Second Ward, marking the second time in four months this site has experienced a fire. According to information obtained by the Houston Chronicle, the call for the fire at 6418 Esperson Street was received at 4:45 a.m. The HFD adopted a defensive strategy, fighting the fire from outside of the building.
"Crews took a defensive attack, fighting the fire from the outside of the structure," HFD public information officer Brent Taylor explained to the Houston Chronicle. No injuries were again reported in this incident, and the fire was under control by 5:20 a.m. This incident follows a fire that occurred in the same building in February, which resulted in $10,000 in damages, according to the City of Houston.
HFD's arson investigators are working to determine the cause of the latest fire. The history of fires at this location has prompted concerns about safety and the possible need for stronger measures to secure vacant properties. The community is awaiting updates and steps to address the situation. Additional units were called to assist with the fire in the East End, helping to bring the flames under control and prevent any spread to nearby areas.
