In the early hours of Sunday morning, gunshots disrupted the relative calm of a Houston neighborhood when Harris County Constable Precinct One deputies shot 47-year-old Hector Reyes after he allegedly pointed a firearm at them. The situation unfolded around 1:30 a.m. on the 2600 block of Basil Point Ct., with calls to dispatch reporting that Reyes had been “drinking excessively” and discharging a gun into the air as reported by FOX 26 Houston.
Upon arrival, deputies were granted entrance into the home by Reyes' wife and located the armed individual on the back patio, where the confrontation leading to the shooting took place, Reyes did not comply with the deputies' demands and instead chose to aim his weapon, an act which resulted in the deputies firing upon him in what appears to be a measure of self-defense and echoing the events, KHOU highlighted the precariousness of the moment, detailing how Reyes pointed the gun at the deputies and may have opened fire.
The aftermath saw Reyes attempting to escape, despite sustaining injuries, by leaping over a fence into a neighboring yard before being apprehended and subsequently transported to a hospital; his condition has been reported as stable. In the face of the incident's gravity, no deputies were injured, but Reyes faces a charge of aggravated assault of a peace officer, KHOU included that pertinent detail along with the deputies' mandatory administrative leave pending investigation.
The deputies' actions, as any use-of-force incident, are currently under evaluation in a joint investigation by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, specifics remain scant but the inquest aims to bring clarity to the series of events that led to this use of police firearms, Assistant Chief Lofton Harrison of the Harris County Constable's Office urged the public to exercise caution, articulating a sentiment captured by both media outlets, "Please, if you're drinking, do not handle weapons at the same time," he said, KHOU reports; it's a stark reminder of the perils when alcohol and firearms converge.
