A Mexican national residing in Houston has entered a guilty plea for violating U.S. immigration laws, within the jurisdiction of the Eastern District of Texas, officials said Wednesday. Arsenio Leal Rodriguez, age 27, admitted to illegal reentry into the country after previous deportations, during proceedings before U.S. Magistrate Judge Zack Hawthorn on May 12, according to details sourced from the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Documents from the U.S. Attorney's Office reveal Rodriguez was detained in the Liberty County Jail on a separate charge on September 19, 2024, it was then, a records check unveiled Rodriguez's criminal past. Notably, a conviction for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon that dates back to September 2019 in Harris County. Further inquiry established that Rodriguez had been deported from the States on two occasions, notably in 2018 and again in 2020.
The news arrives amid a broader initiative, Operation Take Back America, a statement from Acting U.S. Attorney Abe McGlothin, Jr. suggested. The operation is directed towards fortifying the nation against illegal immigration and extinguishing the influence of cartels and transnational criminal organizations known for perpetrating violent crimes, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
The sentencing for Rodriguez looms, with the possibility of up to two years in federal prison hanging in the balance. The court's decision will take into consideration the advisory sentencing guidelines among other statutory factors. A sentencing hearing date will follow, subsequent to the completion of a presentence investigation by the U.S. Probation Office, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office announcement.
The case falls under the scrutiny of the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, as well as the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, with prosecution by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Rachel Grove and Chris Jackson. This cooperative effort is but a single thread in the expansive tapestry of Operation Take Back America, aiming to establish dominion over the lawless and adjudicate those who defy the bounds of legal immigration, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office.
