Attorney General Ken Paxton announced a significant breakthrough in the fight against child sex trafficking with the arrest of Houston-area suspect Deveon Dwayne Byrd and the rescue of a 17-year-old victim. This case highlights the city's ongoing efforts to combat human exploitation and reinforces law enforcement's commitment to dismantling such criminal activities. "The sex trafficking of minors is one of the most heinous and disgusting crimes imaginable, and I will continue to use the full force of my office to put these sick predators behind bars," Paxton stated in a news release.
The proactive investigation, which began with the scrutiny of online sex service advertisements, led to a coordinated rescue effort on May 7. The Office of the Attorney General's Human Trafficking Unit, along with the Fugitive Apprehension Unit, Department of Public Safety Human Trafficking Unit, and the Houston Police Department, located and secured the safety of the victim at a hotel located in the 9000 block of Westheimer Avenue. Byrd, found at the same location, now faces charges for Compelling Prostitution and Trafficking of Persons under the age of 18, according to a report from the Office of the Attorney General.
Paxton praised the collaborative efforts in ensuring the successful operation that brought the teenager to safety. "I commend the brave work by our Human Trafficking Unit and law enforcement partners who helped rescue this young victim. Texas will not tolerate those who prey on children and exploit the innocent," he stressed in a news release. This incident brings attention to the persistent issue of child sex trafficking, which continues to be a significant concern for communities across Texas and emphasizes the need for continued vigilance in protecting children.
Byrd is currently held in the Harris County Jail while the Attorney General’s office and the Harris County District Attorney's office continue their investigation. These agencies are working to pursue justice for the victim and in similar cases.
