It's the end of the line for a beloved Maryland amusement fixture. Six Flags America and its water park, Hurricane Harbor in Bowie, will cease operations after the 2025 season. This decision resulted from an extensive company portfolio review wherein the parks were determined to no longer align with Six Flags' long-term growth strategy. "As part of our comprehensive review of our park portfolio, we have determined that Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor are not a strategic fit with the company’s long-term growth plan," Six Flags President & CEO Richard A. Zimmerman said in a statement obtained by WMAR2 News. The park's last day of operation is November 2.

According to Six Flags, moving forward to market the nearly 500-acre site for redevelopment is believed to "generate the highest value and return on investment." The property's potential sale is yet to yield a clear future for the various rides and attractions currently at the park. Six Flags Entertainment Corporation indicated to PEOPLE that they have "not yet determined what will happen to each ride or attraction after the park is closed," but that relocating them to other Six Flags parks or selling them to other amusement park operators are among the prospective options being considered.

The theme park, famed for its thrill rides and family-friendly attractions, has been a fixture since it opened in 1974 as The Largo Wildlife Preserve and was revamped into Six Flags America in 1999. The park will continue to welcome guests and honor all 2025 season passes throughout its final season.
