The Oak Cliff Cultural Center, a fixture in the Dallas arts scene, currently showcases “Soundings,” a thought-provoking installation by interdisciplinary artist Colette Copeland. Running from April 26 through May 24, the exhibit spotlights the often-muted voices of Texas' women, non-binary, and queer individuals. A special talk and workshop by Copeland herself is slated for May 10 to flesh out the themes and engage attendees in the companion interactive workshop.
"Soundings" invites participants to contribute phrases ripe with personal significance, melding them into a symphony of resilience and collective strength. This sonic tapestry has made its rounds at prominent venues such as Houston Sculpture Month and the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts before gracing the Oak Cliff Cultural Center with its Dallas debut. According to the City of Dallas' official announcement, the experience is capped off with the "Soundings: India" project, showcased at the University of Texas at Dallas earlier this year.
Copeland’s extensive resume includes 34 solo exhibitions and 156 group ones spanning 36 countries. With a BFA from Pratt Institute and an MFA from Syracuse University, she doesn’t just create; she also teaches at the University of Texas and contributes her critical insights to online arts publications.
