Kannapolis commuters should prepare for upcoming nighttime road closures on U.S. 29 due to bridge demolition work. According to a news release from the City of Kannapolis, the N.C. Department of Transportation will begin the project on Tuesday next week to replace the 71-year-old bridge that carries Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue over U.S. 29.
The $5.7 million project will be handled by NJR Group, Inc. Southbound U.S. 29 will be closed from Tuesday next week to Friday next week between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., with detours directing traffic through Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, N. Ridge Avenue, East Avenue, and Jackson Park Road. Northbound U.S. 29 will be closed from June 2 to 5 during the same hours, with detours using Dale Earnhardt Boulevard, S. Little Texas Road, and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue.
The new bridge will include two 16-foot travel lanes and sidewalks on both sides of U.S. 29 within the project area. The existing ramps to and from Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and U.S. 29 will remain in place. The bridge is expected to be completed by fall 2026.
