A devastating house fire in Kenosha County has left a residence in ruins, with authorities pointing to lithium-ion batteries as the likely catalyst for the blaze. The incident occurred yesterday, with the Kansasville Fire and Rescue Department receiving the call around 1 p.m. Fox 6 Now reported that the suspected cause of the fire was batteries in a charging unit which "exploded." The fire inflicted significant damage to the property, leading to the deployment of an excavator to dismantle the structure.
The strong flames meant to quickly respond to the incident presented a formidable challenge due to the home's rural location, which lacked readily accessible fire hydrants. Crews had to transport around 100,000 gallons of water to the site, an effort that took several hours and involved assistance from departments as far as Illinois, according to CBS 58. "There were reports that flames were already coming through the roof," Kansasville Fire and Rescue Department Chief Ron Molnar told Fox 6 Now.
Though the fire resulted in no human injuries, as the homeowner was not present, Chief Molnar confirmed with Fox 6 Now the tragic loss of multiple pets, including two dogs, a hamster, a cat, and a salamander. Crews on scene also had to navigate carefully due to ammunition in the house, although Molnar reassured WISN that it posed no additional threat to firefighters.
According to Molnar's assessment shared with CBS 58, the fire is believed to have been sparked by overheated lithium-ion batteries that had been charging for two to three hours before the fire was reported. These batteries were intended to power a six-foot drone recently purchased by the homeowner. About 20 agencies helped to extinguish the fire and provide resources, as the secluded home, surrounded by wooded landscape, could have caused the fire to burn unnoticed for over two hours before being detected by heavy smoke seen in the area.
