Winds in Las Vegas are expected to decrease today, bringing the coolest temperatures of the week. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are forecast for Southern Nevada, mainly affecting the southern Great Basin region. This follows several days of gusty southwest winds. The National Weather Service Las Vegas released updated weather predictions, indicating a calm period before conditions change later in the week.
Strong winds over 60 mph have continued from the Spring Mountains to Mercury-Desert Rock since Monday. The National Weather Service has extended the High Wind Warning for the area through 4 AM. Cloud cover, along with brief showers and thunderstorms, will move from the Sierra crest to Lincoln County during the day and into the evening. “Today will be the coolest day for most of the region, with high temperatures 10 to 15 degrees below normal for mid May,” the forecast discussion stated.
Las Vegas is expected to see improving weather through the week, with temperatures returning to seasonal norms by Friday. A trough will bring cooler temperatures, rain, and gusty winds over the weekend. "Ensembles and cluster analyses have come into better agreement regarding the evolution of the upper pattern," according to the National Weather Service. Aviation conditions remain VFR, with southwest winds at Harry Reid International potentially shifting northwest overnight. Gusty winds and cloud cover are forecast for airports like DAG and BIH. Spotters are asked to report significant weather events.
