Residents in the Western US, especially in Las Vegas and nearby areas, should prepare for a heat wave. The National Weather Service in Las Vegas warns that temperatures will be 10 to 15 degrees above seasonal averages next week, with "Hot and dry conditions continue through the week," and "the greatest temperatures anomalies look favored across our central and northern zones."
"An Extreme Heat Watch has been issued for areas where there is a high risk for heat related impacts to much of the population." An early season heatwave is expected to bring high temperatures to the region. According to the National Weather Service, "the latest NBM has a probability of LAS reaching 105F or greater at 75% Friday and Saturday, with a nearly 20% chance of reaching 110F on Saturday." Official records show it has "never reached 110F in Las Vegas in May."
Pilots and travelers should be aware that heat may affect operations. The aviation forecast reports that winds will "gradually veer to the southeast by this afternoon, becoming intermittently gusty," with gusts of 15–18KT. "VFR conditions will prevail, with mid and high clouds that are not expected to impact operations." People in affected areas are advised to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak sun hours, and use air-conditioned spaces. "Spotters are encouraged to report any significant weather or impacts according to standard operating procedures," as reported by the National Weather Service.
