Calvin Crew, the convicted murderer of Christina Spicuzza, an Uber driver and mother of four, has been sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. This substantial sentence includes an additional term of 13 to 26 years, as reported by WTAE. The sentencing was firmly rooted in the heinous nature of the crime, wherein Crew was found guilty on charges including first-degree homicide and kidnapping.
The proceedings took a turn when Crew decided not to attend his sentencing. Despite his absence, the family of the victim delivered powerful impact statements. Christina Spicuzza's mother, citing an act of mercy, said, "You should have the death penalty but we showed mercy," according to a statement detailed by WTAE. Her life partner, Brandon Barto, called Crew "a coward" for not facing the sentencing in person.
Christina Spicuzza was tragically killed on February 10, 2022, after what began as a routine pick-up for her Uber driving job. Police reports detailed that Crew forced Spicuzza to drive him against her will for nearly an hour before shooting her and abandoning her body in a wooded area in Monroeville. Court evidence, including the haunting dash camera video showing Spicuzza pleading for her life, played a pivotal role in Crew's conviction, as per information from TribLIVE.
Further strengthening the case against Crew, investigators also accessed cellular and banking data. Crew had been alleged to have taken a bus home after his Uber ride, but detectives confirmed through surveillance footage that he did not board any bus. Even until his sentencing, Crew maintained his innocence and plans to appeal the conviction, a move that he communicated in his pre-sentencing report, according to a mention by the presiding Judge Edward J. Borkowski.
