A man has been charged in the stabbing death of a 53-year-old Valley Village resident, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office. Erick Escamilla faces serious charges after the body of the victim was discovered in his apartment last month. As per the statement by District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman, released on the office's official website, the charged man is accused of not only murder but also first-degree residential burglary with an aggravating factor that the murder occurred during the alleged burglary.
Hochman conveyed in the announcement that "no one should have to endure the terror of someone breaking into their home, where people feel the safest and being brutally murdered." On April 23, Escamilla, a previous offender with a 2019 residential burglary conviction, supposedly broke into the victim's apartment at around 3:50 a.m., resulting in Hidra's tragic death by a screwdriver used as a deadly weapon.
The gravity of the crime has led to the filing of case 25CJCF02553 on May 8, as detailed in the district attorney's press release. Escamilla, whose date of birth is listed as October 7, 1997, is now potentially facing the death penalty or life imprisonment without parole, although a decision regarding seeking the death penalty remains pending. Escalating the severity of charges is the special circumstance allegation owing to the murder intertwining with a burglary.
Currently, the case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department and will be prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Jonathan Chung from the Major Crimes Division. Escamilla, despite the severity of the allegations, maintains the presumption of innocence until proven guilty, as the nature of our legal system dictates. No arraignment date has been set yet for the defendant.
