Los Angeles is set to make history as the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is primed to become the first venue ever to host three Olympic Games. The city's mayors and LA28 officials unveiled the dual venues for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Opening and Closing Ceremonies, the Coliseum and SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, according to an announcement by CBS News Los Angeles.
Mark your calendars for July 14, 2028, as the Olympic Opening Ceremony will see both the Coliseum and SoFi Stadium play host, in what seems an ambitious joint effort to showcase LA's athletic grandeur. "These two extraordinary venues will create an unforgettable experience, welcoming fans from across the globe to an Olympic and Paralympic Games like never before and concluding what will go down as one of the most incredible Games in history," LA28 Chairperson and President Casey Wasserman expressed in a statement obtained by CBS News Los Angeles.
The historical significance of the Coliseum, paired with the state-of-the-art SoFi Stadium, has not only residents but also city officials buzzing with pride. Mayor Karen Bass said, "The Coliseum has been a landmark host to some of the most iconic moments in all of sports history. That story continues in 2028 as our City and our region welcomes the world for what will be the greatest Olympic and Paralympic Games."
Meanwhile, the Paralympic Games will also see their share of the spotlight. They will kick off to start in Inglewood on August 15, 2028, and conclude back at the Coliseum on the 27th. As SoFi Stadium's owner E. Stanley Kroenke noted in a press release from SoFi Stadium, "Sports has the power to inspire and unite people of all backgrounds, generations, and experiences, and the Olympic and Paralympic Games serve as a model for how this unparalleled platform of sport can bridge the world." With the ethos of unity and celebration in the backdrop, LA28 appears set to deliver not just games, but a spectacle hymning LA's perennial bond with the Olympics.
