Los Angeles' own Oliver Halkett, a 13-year-old from the Silver Lake area, has ascended to the finals of the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee, reported ABC7. Bringing the focus back to academics, the Mirman School seventh grader has spent countless hours preparing for the national stage, and his hard work is paying off as he battles with eight other sharp minds for the top prize later this Thursday in Washington D.C.
Despite the intense competition, Oliver when telling Eyewitness News, appeared unfazed, saying, "I just practiced like hours a day." His dedication saw him triumph over words such as "gobbe," which, having spelled it correctly, landed him in the renowned competition's final round. Should Oliver emerge victorious, he stands to win not only a $50,000 cash prize but also a trophy and significant bragging rights – a substantial feather in the cap for the aspiring governmental official. Oliver expressed his ambition to occupy a high-ranking government seat, with aspirations such as Attorney General or Secretary of State.
The city of Los Angeles has not been shy in showing its support for the young speller, evidenced by a proud Facebook shoutout from Mayor Karen Bass, who encouraged the city to root for its local contender. Sharing in a post, the mayor stated, "Oliver, Los Angeles is so proud of you, and we are cheering you on!" The community's collective pride hinges on Oliver's performance, where a victory would mark a historical moment as the first from Los Angeles County to win the national title.
It's worth noting that Oliver has a repertoire of interests that extends beyond spelling. According to the Scripps website, as highlighted by CBS News, he enjoys playing the piano and soccer, and is poring over Mandarin and Latin amongst other hobbies. His qualification came on the heels of a win at the LA County Regional Spelling Bee, where, after one of the rounds, he correctly spelled diazepam, signaling not just his spelling acumen but perhaps a foreshadowing of the heights he is destined to reach.
The journey to the finals was no simple feat, with Oliver having to navigate through local and regional competitions. Starting with 243 competitors, the Scripps National Spelling Bee whittled down to the sharp-witted finalists, among whom Oliver stands, each aiming to etch their name in the annals of the spelling elite. With the finals set to take place at 5:00 p.m. PST at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center.
