At the Vision Northwest North Carolina Conference in Boone, Lieutenant Governor Rachel Hunt underscored the crucial role of workforce development in Western North Carolina's recovery from Hurricane Helene. Hunt emphasized the importance of local investments in education and child care for crafting a resilient, Future-Ready state, as reported by the Lieutenant Governor.
"As Western North Carolina works to rebuild from Hurricane Helene, we have an opportunity to build an even stronger future for our neighbors by making meaningful investments in these communities," Hunt told attendees. In an effort to advance her Future-Ready Agenda, she highlighted the essential connection between accessible, affordable child care and the ability for community members to train for and occupy the jobs that North Carolina's future will demand. To facilitate this, Hunt is promoting investment in community colleges and tackling the child care crisis that besets the region.
The Boone Chamber of Commerce President David Jackson expressed his support, highlighting the synergy between local business needs and educational offerings. "We live in a region of the state where our business and industry partners are supported by educators who are providing degrees, certificates, and credentials that match our workforce needs," Jackson said, underscoring the importance of aligning educational programs with local labor demands that lead to sustained career growth, as detailed by the Lieutenant Governor.
Directly following the conference, in a meeting that the rebuilding efforts towered over, Hunt visited the Mast General Store and later toured the Western Youth Network’s new Youth Center site, an initiative to combat the dearth of school-aged childcare. Jennifer Warren, the Executive Director of Western Youth Network, expressed her gratitude for the visit and shared the project's aim to expand services that are pivotal to the community's youth. "We are so honored that Lieutenant Governor Hunt took the time to learn more about the Western Youth Network's services, which provide students with the relationships, stability, and skills they need to be successful in school, in the workforce, and beyond," Warren articulated her appreciation for Hunt's focus on programs that shape the futures of North Carolinians, as mentioned in the Lieutenant Governor's release.
With North Carolina setting its sights on being Future-Ready, Hunt's agenda seeks to tie together workforce development and education.
