Authorities in Iredell County are in pursuit of an individual suspected to have been involved in a road rage shooting that erupted off Interstate 77 and continued onto Wall Street in Statesville. The incident, reported around 2:20 p.m. yesterday, led to an intense law enforcement response as shots were fired following a vehicular chase, though, fortunately, no injuries have been confirmed. Queen City News detailed how two cars seemed at the core of the investigation and were later towed from the scene.
Witnesses living in proximity to the shootout described the rapid succession of approximately ten gunshots. "They were just pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, just one right after the other," Deborah Boovey, a resident of Wall Street, recounted in a statement obtained by Queen City News. Despite the immediate danger posed by the gunfire, Boovey asserted a sense of serenity about the neighborhood, stating, "We never have any problem over here."
The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office was quick to act, deploying K-9 units and drones to aid in the manhunt while the North Carolina State Highway Patrol collaborated in establishing a perimeter to assist. Emphasizing the seriousness of the situation, authorities have described the suspect as potentially armed and last seen clad in lime green shorts and black shirt. WCNC also reported on the suspect's elusive nature, including uncertainty about the vehicle type used in the potential escape.
As the search extends, the sheriff's office has grown dependent on aid from the public, urging anyone with information pertinent to this incident or who might have observed an individual matching the suspect's description to come forward. Community members can reach out to the Iredell County Sheriff's Office directly at 704-878-3100. Reflecting on the disruption, a local told WCCB Charlotte that despite the incident, her sense of security remains unshaken, "I heard the gunfire down the street, so I came out on the porch and I saw people running. It was pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow."
