A Maryland man has been condemned to no less than 25 years in prison for the fatal shooting of his children's grandfather in Springfield Gardens. Sheldon Dottin, age 51, received the sentence after a jury found him guilty of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon, as reported by the Queens District Attorney's Office.
It was on April 1, 2022, when Dottin, after switching his vehicle for a rented car, drove to the home of 72-year-old Gladstone Barrett wearing a disguise that included a hat, mask, and jacket, he then after a short dispute shot Barrett causing severe injuries that ultimately led to Barrett's death 18 days later, during that time, Barrett managed to identify Dottin as his assailant both verbally to his wife and to a police officer on camera which played a critical role in reaching the conviction.
According to the Queens District Attorney's Office, following the tragic incident, Dottin escaped to Panama, where he was later arrested by authorities while trying to board a flight to Trinidad and subsequently extradited back to Queens; the whole sequence of events reflects a calculated effort to avoid the repercussions of his actions which culminated in his recent sentencing by Supreme Court Justice Michael Aloise. "Sheldon Dottin left a family without its patriarch when he shot Gladstone Barrett in his own home," declared Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz, who made it clear that the law would not tolerate such a heinous act.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Gabriel J. Reale with the support of Assistant District Attorney Peyton Nir, under the guidance of Homicide Bureau Chief John Kosinski, and displayed the thorough work and dedication of law enforcement and judicial officials in serving justice, the conviction and subsequent sentencing serve to honor the memory of the victim, in the words of DA Katz, "We hope today’s sentencing provides a measure of comfort to the victim’s grieving relatives," as per the Queens District Attorney's Office.
