A Michigan State Police trooper was hospitalized, and a suspect killed, following a shooting incident in Detroit last night. The shooting occurred before 8 p.m. at southbound M-10 at Wyoming, as the trooper was involved in a traffic stop, according to CBS News Detroit.
The state trooper, with about a year's service under his belt, confronted a 41-year-old man from Highland Park, which resulted in a physical altercation, FOX 2 Detroit detailed. The trooper was shot three times during the conflict, two bullets were stopped by his vest, and one hit his shoulder. He managed to fire back at the suspect who was pronounced dead at the scene.
After receiving medical attention, the trooper's condition was reported as stable. A handgun was found at the scene, following the incident which took place above the Lodge on Wyoming, the reports from local news outlets indicated. State police had not released the identity of the suspect as of Friday night.
The shooting is under intense investigation, primarily led by the Detroit Police Department Homicide Task Force. "He is doing well, considering the circumstances," MSP Director Col. James F. Grady II said during a briefing outside the hospital, according to a statement obtained by The Detroit News. The unnamed trooper, and the events that escalated the traffic stop to violence, remain the focus of the ongoing inquiry.
