Tomorrow, a crucial discussion concerning the safety of our city's inhabitants will unfold at City Hall, as the Zoning, Neighborhoods and Development Committee convenes to evaluate building code amendments in the wake of a devastating fire. The committee will focus on file #250193, which addresses enforcement, retroactive codes, and installation protocols for sprinkler systems in apartment buildings. This conversation has been sparked by the tragic fire at the Highland Court Apartments earlier this month.
According to a communication released by the Milwaukee city officials, Alderman Robert J. Bauman, chair of the committee, noted the Highland Court Apartments lacked a sprinkler system since it was built before current laws required one. "It is clear in this instance that the lack of sprinklers made this fire much, much worse," Bauman expressed on the City of Milwaukee. He sees the code review as a stepping stone toward potentially life-saving future regulations.
The file being evaluated was initiated in response to the Mother's Day fire that highlighted vulnerabilities in older buildings, specifically those without modern safety measures. The costs of retrofitting older structures with sprinkler systems may be high, but the cost of inaction could prove to be much more severe.
The upcoming meeting is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. tomorrow, at City Hall's room 301-B. Those unable to attend in person can still partake in the civic process, as the proceedings will be made accessible to the public via live broadcast on the City Channel, available on Spectrum Cable channel 25 and AT&T U-Verse channel 99, as well as online through the city's website streaming service.
