Over 134,000 residents in Los Angeles County are receiving notifications from LA County and the nonprofit Undue Medical Debt, letting them know their medical bills have been paid through the Medical Debt Relief Program. The program, which aims to purchase and eliminate a staggering $500 million in medical debt, is targeting residents earning no more than four times the federal poverty level, or those whose medical debts exceed five times their income. As reported by ABC7, "You don’t have to take any action," explained L.A. County Supervisor Holly Mitchell. "It is a real notification that we are taking care of your medical debt."

According to FOXLA, some residents are understandably skeptical when they first receive their letters with a blue seal reading "Undue Medical Bill." They shouldn't be. It's not a joke, and it's certainly not another unpaid bill; it's confirmation that their medical debts have been retired with no need to respond or apply. One LA County resident, upon learning of the program, couldn't hide her astonishment. She had previously faced a $7,000 medical bill despite having health insurance, an expense so daunting that it factored into her decision to leave California. "I'm very glad they're doing this," she told ABC7, acknowledging the program could prevent others from shunning necessary care due to costs.

New data underscores the pressing need for the program in Los Angeles County, revealing that nearly 882,000 adults—about one in nine county residents—are affected by medical debt, which can lead to painful financial and health choices. This is up from 11.1% in 2023 from 10.0% in 2022. These figures spotlight the sad reality that even as insurance coverage has expanded, the weight of medical debt remains a significant problem. "Medical debt should never stand between our residents and the care they need," Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell told the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

The LA County Medical Debt Relief Program includes partnerships with hospitals and community-based organizations, and new prevention-focused measures, such as improved eligibility tools for financial assistance programs and increased access to resources. As a result, Los Angeles County is positioned to tackle the complex root causes of medical debt head-on. Further, the Los Angeles City Council unanimously advanced a motion to expand medical debt data collection to 34 additional hospitals, complementing the county's efforts. Supervisor Janice Hahn sees the county's action as a testament to good governance, stating, "This is LA County government at its best. We are seizing an opportunity and making a smart financial decision to make people’s lives better," as noted in the release from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
