Montgomery County and Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland teamed up this past weekend to push the boundaries of eco-friendly living in affordable housing with a significant update to Allium Place, an affordable housing community located in Silver Spring. Workers and volunteers, shoulder to shoulder with new residents, dove into the creation of RainScapes conservation gardens, covering over 1,000 square feet, and rooted five shade trees into the suburban soil, reported Montgomery County's official news portal. These green infrastructure enhancements spring from a collaboration involving the County's Department of Environmental Protection's (DEP) RainScapes and Tree Montgomery programs, marking the first time initiatives like these have been integrated into an affordable housing project from inception.

"I’ve always believed that affordable housing and environmental sustainability don’t have to be separate goals; they can go hand in hand," County Executive Marc Elrich said while overseeing the installation of the gardens, according to Montgomery County's official news portal. The project champions the concept that building homes can coincide with supporting both healthier communities and cleaner waterways. Elrich praised Habitat for Humanity for its pivotal role and commended the DEP team for their contributions in realizing this vision.

The event showcasing the new green infrastructure at Allium Place saw a mix of local dignitaries, volunteers, and the residents themselves joining forces to celebrate the initiative. Among them was Councilmember Natali Fani-González, representing the district and previously backing the project during her tenure on the Planning Board. In her view, “Allium Place is a great testament to how the public and private sectors can work together to deliver an inclusive and amazing community right in the heart of District 6," she relayed in a statement obtained by Montgomery County's official news portal.

Fani-González also underscored the benefits that the newly planted shade trees and the environmentally friendly landscaping will bring to the diverse community of Allium Place. As she put it, these additions will enrich the lives of "folks from all walks of life are calling it home," celebrating the project's transition from concept to concrete reality. Emphasizing inclusive growth, her satisfied observation of the project's success underscored the joint effort's ability to construct something tangible and communal out of the fabric of cross-sector collaboration.
