In an unsettling incident in Moorpark, California, a student's display of a single round of ammunition at their school has led to the arrest of a 40-year-old resident, Ricardo Nunez, on multiple firearm-related charges. The episode unfolded on May 27, 2025, according to a statement from the Moorpark Police Department. A collaborative effort by the Moorpark School Resource Officer, Investigations Unit, and Special Enforcement Unit, together with the Gun Violence Reduction Program, led investigators to the student's home, where further scrutiny brought to light a cache of illegal firearms and ammunition.
At the Campus Canyon College Preparatory Academy, initial investigations by the School Resource Officer revealed that the student intended to show the ammunition to friends. Digging deeper, the responding agencies found Nunez to be the owner and responsible party for two unregistered assault rifles, a handgun, several high-capacity magazines, and additional ammunition. Each was found unsecured and within easy reach of children. For these infractions, Nunez is now facing charges including child endangerment, criminal firearm storage, and the unlawful transfer of a firearm, among others.
Moorpark law enforcement and the School Resource Officers have extended their commitment to preventing similar incidents by issuing a public reminder about the importance of responsible gun ownership. As mentioned in both the media release and news alerts, they have urged families to store firearms securely, use California-approved safety devices and keep ammunition stored separately from guns, in a locked container. The intent is to minimize the risk of unauthorized use, especially by children who might not understand the grave implications of their curiosity.
