A Morrisville man, Michael Aaron Matthews, has entered a guilty plea to the charge of second-degree murder in the 2023 shooting death of his wife, Nabaruna Karmakar. As reported by CBS17, Matthews was sentenced to 13 to 16 years in prison yesterday.
Responding to a tragic scene on the 100 block of Seagrave Place in April 2023, police discovered Karmakar deceased with two gunshot wounds. Matthews had misleadingly reported the incident as a "double suicide" in his call to police, following the murder that shook the local community. Court documents also reveal a mandatory condition for Matthews to undergo mental health and substance abuse treatment while incarcerated, and he is prohibited from contacting the victim's family.
WRAL provided further details of the court proceedings, stating that evidence presented by prosecutors suggested a calculated attempt to "stage" the crime scene. Objects found next to Karmakar's body comprised a gas can, bullet casings, and the victim's arms wrapped around an urn containing her recently deceased dog's ashes, contributing to a false depiction of suicide.
The conviction concludes a chilling case that spanned over two years, resolving with a plea deal accepted by a Wake County judge yesterday. Having shot his wife multiple times inside their Morrisville home, Matthews tried to conceal his actions by manipulating the appearance of the crime scene, as revealed in a report by ABC11. The sentence laid down carries a minimum of 13 years to a maximum of 16 years and nine months imprisonment.
