The North Carolina Turnpike Authority (NCTA) is set to implement a new step in the development of the Mid-Currituck Bridge Project. In an effort to update traffic data, the NCTA will be installing temporary traffic counting devices on U.S. 158, close to the Duck Woods Drive intersection. These devices will be tasked with collecting information on the volume of vehicles equipped with toll transponders entering the Outer Banks, as reported by NCDOT press release.
Starting around 9:00 AM tomorrow, the installation requires shutting down one lane at a time on the affected highway. Ensuring to keep traffic flowing, the contractor will move from lane to lane allowing at least one lane open at all times. Despite these precautions, motorists traveling through the area during the installation should be prepared for minor delays. They are advised to exercise caution amid the lane closures.
According to the NCTA, the gathered information from the traffic counting devices is essential for accurate traffic and usage forecast models. These models will be instrumental for future planning and transportation management in the region. The NCTA's initiative indicates a strategic approach to address the long-term demands of infrastructure and mobility within the Outer Banks area.
While the NCTA anticipates the work will be completed by Thursday morning, variables such as weather conditions could influence the schedule. Motorists planning to use U.S. 158 during the time of installation should stay aware of the potential shift in traffic patterns and are advised to allow for extra travel time.
