Nevada's Assembly passed Assembly Bill 381, called Reba's Law, with a 42-0 vote. The bill increases the penalty for animal cruelty to a felony in response to the case of an English bulldog named Reba, as reported by News 3 LV.
Reba's Law is being fast-tracked after Reba died from being left in a plastic bin in July 2024. Markeisha Foster and Issac Laushaul, Jr., connected to her death, are held at Clark County Detention Center. The bill received a waiver to allow amendments that increase penalties for first-time animal torture or harm offenses from a category D to a more severe category. Currently, the penalty is one to four years in prison. The bill now awaits approval from the Nevada Senate, according to KTNV.
Reba’s Law is currently under review by the Senate, with a deadline set for June 2. The bill passed the assembly with bipartisan support. If approved by the Senate, the bill will become law and establish protections against animal cruelty, as mentioned by News 3 LV.
