The North Carolina Department of Labor has introduced a new website to support the lodging industry in identifying and reporting human trafficking. The site provides training and resources for hospitality employees to recognize potential signs of trafficking. This effort is in preparation for a new state law effective July 1, and enables businesses to meet legal requirements, as reported by the N.C. Department of Labor.
Lodging establishments and vacation rental managers must ensure their employees and contractors complete approved human trafficking awareness training every two years, according to N.C. Gen. Stat. §130A-511 and §42A-39. Employers are also required to establish reporting procedures and keep records to show compliance. Labor Commissioner Luke Farley said, "We all have a part to play in the fight against human trafficking," as stated by the N.C. Department of Labor.
The new N.C. Department of Labor website provides free human trafficking prevention training materials, downloadable signage for businesses, and a FAQ section. These resources raise awareness and ensure businesses comply with regulations. “These new requirements empower hospitality workers with the knowledge and tools to recognize the signs of trafficking and respond responsibly,” said Farley in the N.C. Department of Labor announcement. Lodging and rental businesses, along with other interested parties, can access the human trafficking awareness website through the N.C. Department of Labor.
