In North Carolina, residents have grown accustomed to the trials, and tribulations that come with visiting the Department of Motor Vehicles. Governor Josh Stein, alongside Secretary of Transportation Joey Hopkins and DMV Commissioner Paul Tine, highlighted the state's DMV crisis and advocated for a communal effort in government to enhance customer service at a recent press event.
"Hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians each year visit the DMV, and they need to be able to take care of their business in a timely manner," Governor Stein stated, stressing the importance of a functional DMV. The call to arms, however, isn't just about decreasing wait times; it's about overall customer and employee satisfaction within this vital state agency.
The sentiment was echoed by Transportation Secretary Hopkins, who emphasized the universal impact of the DMV on North Carolinians, saying, "Every North Carolinian on our roads will need to interact with the DMV at some point, so we have a responsibility to get it right." Hopkins expressed contentment with the proactive approach the new DMV Commissioner Tine has taken since his appointment on April 30, as per the Office of the Governor.
Commissioner Tine, who has dedicated the past month to grasping the nuances of the DMV's challenges, acknowledged that even though initial steps such as improved examiner pay, and streamlined website navigation have been implemented, there is "much more work to be done to ensure a positive experience for customers and team members alike." In response to the ongoing issues, Governor Stein's 2025-2027 budget proposal includes funding for an additional 61 Driver License Examiners and 24 new positions in an effort to expand the capacity and efficiency of services offered, as detailed by the Office of the Governor.
This proactive stance has been met with approval by the state’s legislative body, with the House budget reflecting similar expansion goals. The unified endeavor between the Governor’s office, the NC Department of Transportation, and the General Assembly signifies a concerted effort to rectify longstanding DMV deficits, hoping to streamline processes that are, for many, a fact of life in North Carolina.
