The North Carolina Department of Information Technology is reopening the prequalification window for the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program, offering a slice of the $1.5 billion pie dedicated to high-speed internet projects. According to the NCDIT announcement, this fund is set to get all North Carolinians to affordable, reliable high-speed internet by 2030.
Time is running out for providers hoping to join the BEAD program, with the prequalification process now serving as a crucial gateway to access much-needed funding. As per NCDIT Deputy Secretary for Broadband and Digital Opportunity Annette Taylor, the program promises to enable a spectrum of services from remote work to telehealth, as she told their website. Broadband providers need to hit this window running, or wait for the next round during the project application phase to get a shot at those funding goals.
For internet providers on the fence, the division responsible has put together a guidance document to ease the struggle of prequalification. This guide lays out what's needed, from financial nous to operational capability. A guidance, response form, and checklist can be snagged over at the NCDIT's website, and the deadline to slide in those prequal applications is June 30, 11:59 p.m., sharp.
Already boasting of over $635 million in ARPA funds awarded, NCDIT is on a tear when it comes to hooking up homes and businesses to faster internet. With a deadline from the U.S. Department of the Treasury by December 31, 2026, to use these initial ARPA funds, they're pushing full steam ahead. After that, the BEAD budget will kick in, targeting the more challenging locations by 2030. They're not taking changes from the feds lightly either, pledging to incorporate any federal program changes into the BEAD subgrantee selection process as necessary, as reported on their official announcement.
